Year 7

PORTRAITS

In 2021 Year 7 worked hard on learning new skills in drawing and painting. Some had never painted a portrait before and they were challenged by trying to achieve a depth in skin tone by adding layered colours to achieve dimension in their work. They persevered with the portraits of their teachers and tried to paint more than a likeness. They were working on achieving a representation of their teachers.

Year 7 also created photoshop portraits of themselves appropriating old masters. Research was conducted on contemporary appropriation artist Kehinde Wiley and Renaissance artist Artemisia Gentileschi, . Students learnt more about the context of creating artworks and about the background they came from, which allowed the students to be curious and inspired.

Corey’s photoshop artwork portrays himself as a master painter as he creates the painting “Annoying Siblings”. Humor is used to engage the audience as they relate to the title of the artwork. There are also other contemporary references in the background such as volleyball and Mario.

Most students used Adobe Photoshop to create the appropriated artworks. Photoshop has a variety of tools they can use to create and shape their works of art. They were able to add backgrounds and pictures as well as cropping and manipulating them. This allowed for personal expression in their choice of colours, background, face and position.

Each of the photoshop artworks are unique in their own way. Art is all about unique and individual choices, concepts, expression and innovation. The year 7 artists have done a wonderful job in creating their unique and creative works of art.

COMIC & LOCKDOWN WORLD

Year 8 2021 created comics from writing narratives and examined their narrow lockdown worlds through the filter of the 5km area radius.

By creating a narrative, students were able to engage audiences with the senses of sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. This enabled the students to envisage their narrative worlds and then create illustrations using comic applications such as comic life; some used animation and some drew the illustrations by hand.

Being locked down and existing within a limited area forced us all to re-examine our lives, our priorities, our homes and connections to our area. The year 8 students studied the Indigenous artist and Barkantji elder, Badger Bates, born near Wilcannia on the Darling River. They learnt that Bates grew up fishing and traveling the Darling River with his grandmother and that she also taught him the ancient art of carving. Bates has gone on to exhibit his printmaking art all about his upbringing as well as the cultural intersection of living a traditional life and growing up in the town of Wilcannia.

Students then created their own maps that portray the connections they have with their own areas, the roads they travel, the parks they play in and the buildings they have relationships with. Some used colour, some created symbolism and others personal keys. They all had a very individual and creative take on their area.
