CASTLE
Our Year 7 class for Newman decided to explore deeper and find more about the Concentric Castles from Medieval Europe. Concentric castles were built around the 13th century when wars were starting to break out across England and Europe. The Castles were used as a defensive structure for attacking the invaders but also defending the king, his family, and his people. As we dug deeper into our study of castles we discovered that the concentric castle was developed from earlier versions including the Stone keep the castle and the Motte and Bailey castle. These three castles were used for two purposes to Protect and Attack. Based on our study of the different castles we were able to practically apply our knowledge and understanding and I chose to build a lego concentric castle because it had a unique design compared to earlier designs and easily identifiable features including a moat, curtain walls, guards, and also the tower.

The war axe was one of the iconic weapons made in medieval times. Like the sword it was a melee weapon but had longer range than the sword. Most knights who mastered this weapon will have heavy armour to get close. The war axe has two sides, one small for quick moves for people behind you, the long side was used for the big swings and finishing of the enemy. The axe is special because it uses the element of brute force and sharp attacks. The axe was mostly bent slightly so it can be more comfortable which results in bigger and more accurate hits. King Richard the Lionheart was famous for using the war axe in his battles. There are many different variations in the axe including, a one-handed war axe which was significantly smaller and as the name suggests it is supposed to be used by one hand. The Dane axe was the early version of the war axe. It only has one blade, much smaller, no curved wood, but most importantly the blade was thinner and had one side.
The bardiche was a version of the war axe which originated in the 14 century. The axe had a giant blade which can injure your hand as the blade was curved into the wood. The blade was thinner with no curve in the wood.
The axe I have made today is the most common type of axe, the war axe. Like I mentioned before it has two sides with one large and one tiny. The blade was much thicker which resulted in stronger attacks. The wood is bent to make it comfortable to the user. Finally the war axe is not only a weapon but can be used as a tool which would save poor knights and other people hundreds as it work as a tool.

CARTOGRAPHY
In Geography this year we studied cartography (the study of maps). One of the highlights of our learning as Newman students was the construction of a liveable suburb. We were asked questions to help up come up with a plan for our suburb like how many people would live there and what the human (facilities and infrastructure) and natural environment (the landscape) features would be. We then had to draw this as a map including the cartography skills we had learned like B.O.L.T.S (Border, Orientation, Legend, Title and Scale) keeping in mind how the location of these features would impact liveability.

ECO-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT
Students have studied Human Wellbeing during HSIE this year and were required to design their own classroom for the future which would incorporate sustainable options. This would secure a more eco-friendly environment that would positively impact the environment but also increase the overall wellbeing of all students. All individuals would be able to flourish in an environmentally friendly school setting as the adaptations made to the stock standard classroom improve wellbeing and boost morale. As part of the task, students identified various pieces of furniture that could be beneficial for sustainability and they justified their choices through various reasoning. This varied from bamboo furniture to bio-glass flooring all of which would benefit the environment but also transform learning. The final section of this task challenged students to justify their own choices by answering key questions based on how an environmentally friendly classroom would impact student wellbeing and the college as a whole for future years.
As the task has shown, the classroom that has now been reinvented can achieve sustainability. Not only has this model proven how sustainable and eco-friendly a school can be it demonstrates the perspective of the students and portrays exactly what they feel it required to do so. By challenging the students in such a manner this delves deeper into the minds of the future and exemplifies the perspective shown of what exactly needs to be done to improve their and future students' wellbeing. This task also demonstrates the lengths needed to improve student’s quality of life at school but also tackle a major issue in the current world, that being sustainability. This classroom setting needs to be implemented as the future model for a learning setting as not only does it save the environment by implementing a plethora of environment friendly aspects. But improves the setting itself with the addition of live walls and how interactive the classroom can be in order to engage students at a much higher rate and achieve the most out of students in class time.
